Biography

Volkan Otugen started his academic career at New York University in 1988 as an assistant professor of Aerospace Engineering and rose through the ranks to become a full professor in 2002. He joined SMU in 2007 as a tenured professor and the chair of the mechanical Engineering Department. He served as the Senior Associate Dean of the Lyle School of Engineering between August 2012 and October 2022. Prof. Otugen has a B.S. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He is the author or coauthor of over 140 articles and holds five US patents. He is the recipient of the SAE Ralph Teetor Award for Excellence in Education in 1993 and is a Fulbright Fellow (1998). He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His research is in experimental and theoretical fluid mechanics, high-speed aerodynamics, plasma applications to aerodynamics and photonic sensors.
