How to Register for Your Government Externship Course
Registration Process
1. Secure an Externship Placement.
Students must first be chosen for an externship placement in the Government & Public Interest Externship Program. For information about available placements and the application process, contact the SMU Law Office of Public Service.
2. Contact Assistant Dean Nasser Siadat.
You must meet with or email Assistant Dean for Public Interest & Pro Bono, Nasser Siadat, before submitting your registration materials to the Registrar’s Office.
3. Complete the Government & Public Interest Externship Program Registration.
After you have met with or emailed Dean Siadat and have been chosen for an externship placement in the Government & Public Interest Externship Program, complete the required Government & Public Interest Externship Registration Form.
Once the form is completed and approved, the Registrar’s Office will complete your registration for the course.
Fieldwork Requirements
Students must complete 60 hours of fieldwork for each externship credit hour:
- 2 credits: Minimum of 120 fieldwork hours
- 3 credits: Minimum of 180 fieldwork hours
Important: Do not complete the registration form until you have been chosen for an externship placement in the Government & Public Interest Externship Program and have contacted Dean Siadat.
