Q&As - We asked current student, Sarah Frazee!

Sarah Frazee is a Class of 2028 student looking to soon declare her business major.

How do you balance the demands of athletics with the expectations of the BBA curriculum?

I’m very intentional about carving out time for the things that matter most and keeping my priorities clear. Being an athlete gives me a lot of structure, which forces me to stay organized and on top of my work. I also make sure to protect time for Bible studies and time with friends, which helps me stay balanced and grounded amid a very full and demanding schedule.

Has there been a moment in your athletic or academic journey that felt especially meaningful or defining?

My first spring at SMU was especially defining—I spent the entire spring taking my first college courses while training and playing volleyball, and it completely reshaped my lifestyle. I learned how to be more intentional with my time by focusing on my studies, my sport, and building my network through business and social events. Since I graduated a semester early from high school to come to SMU, adapting to a new environment so quickly was eye-opening and pushed me to grow fast.

What support systems have been most helpful for you as a student-athlete?

I’ve been incredibly supported by my academic advisor, Alana Owens, my BBA coach, Corey Hamilton, my volleyball strength coach, Anthony Cockrill, my religious mentor, and friends on other athletic teams. They’ve helped me stay accountable, encouraged me when things felt overwhelming, and reminded me why I chose this path. Having people who care about both my performance and my well-being has made all the difference.

What’s your favorite way to recharge or unwind on campus after a busy day of classes and training?

I love spending time in one of SMU’s beautiful libraries, either studying or listening to music while scrolling on Pinterest. I also really enjoy relaxing at the athletic dining hall, The Flanagan Family Training Center, where I can eat nutritious food, unwind, and socialize with other student-athletes. Those moments help me reset and return to my responsibilities with renewed focus and energy.

What advice would you give to prospective students hoping to balance athletics with the BBA program?

Use all of your resources—there are so many opportunities available to you as a student-athlete in the BBA program. Don’t be afraid to lean on your advisors, coaches, professors, and peers. If you take advantage of what’s offered and stay proactive, you’ll put yourself in a great position to succeed.

Thank you, Sarah, for sharing your SMU Cox journey! It’s inspiring to see how fully you’ve embraced the resources around you to thrive and create a meaningful path forward!
