General Questions

You can register for your class of choice by using our online system.

  1. From the list of courses, select your course. A detailed course description will display with more details. Section information includes dates, times and delivery methods (on-campus or online). Some courses offer multiple sections each term.
  2. Click Add to Cart.
  3. You will be prompted to go to Checkout. If you would like to choose more than one course, you may do so before completing the checkout process by clicking the Close button on the pop-up window.
  4. New users will be prompted to set up an account. Existing users will be prompted to log in.
  5. New users must choose a password that is at least six (but no more than 10) characters and includes both upper- and lowercase letters as well as a combination of letters and numbers.
  6. Proceed to enter payment information and confirm your purchase. We accept payment via credit card (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express).

We understand that issues may arise. Please alert us as soon as possible, so that we can assist you with other arrangements.

If you cancel before class begins, you have several options:

  • Request a refund, minus a $25 processing fee
  • Transfer to another course, without a processing fee
  • Receive credit toward another SMU Lifelong Learning class (to be used within one year)
  • Substitute another individual in your place, without a processing fee

If you cancel after class begins, you can:

  • Transfer to another course, without a processing fee
  • Receive credit toward another SMU Lifelong Learning class (to be used within one year)
  • Substitute another individual in your place, without a processing fee

When extenuating circumstances occur, such as low enrollments or instructor illness, course cancellations may be necessary. We will notify you by email if your class is cancelled. Should SMU Lifelong Learning cancel a course, you will receive a full refund.

Before the beginning of each course, you will receive an email reminder including the location details, parking directions and a list of any additional supplies required (if necessary).

Locations are detailed in the course listing and on your confirmation email once you have enrolled in a course. Some classes may have specific meeting instructions, if held off-campus. SMU Lifelong Learning staff or instructors will provide details for those meetings.

SMU Lifelong Learning courses are open to the public. SMU faculty, staff and alumni are eligible for discounts on many SMU Lifelong Learning courses. Please contact us for more information. SMU Lifelong Learning courses are not covered by SMU tuition, financial aid or scholarships.

SMU Lifelong Learning offers courses for all ages.

  • SMU College Prep: includes students from middle school to high, also referred to as pre-college students. Grade-level requirements and age restrictions, if applicable, will be noted in the course details.
  • Personal Enrichment: open to adults 18 years and older.
  • Career Success: open to adults 18 years and older.

Most courses are delivered in-person, in a classroom setting. Some classes have both in-person and online options available.

Career Success

Inform your instructor. If your schedule availability changes, we can help you make arrangements to cancel or transfer your registration to another class.

Students attending on-campus classes will receive materials on the first day of class.

Students registered for online test preparation courses will receive materials via mail before the first session. Please ensure your mailing address is complete and correct on your student profile.

Students who take SMU Test Prep courses acquire the skills and tools needed to succeed on standardized tests through the comprehensive study program we provide. Results vary based on the degree to which students apply themselves while taking the course. We do not guarantee test score improvement.

College Prep

Current high school students planning to take the exams or wishing to improve their scores.

We provide all materials and technology for most workshops. We will inform you in advance if any other materials or supplies are needed for special projects.

Students who take test prep courses acquire the skills and tools needed to succeed on standardized tests through the comprehensive study program we provide. Results vary based on the degree to which students apply themselves while taking the course. We do not guarantee test score improvement.

Lunch is not provided. Students should bring a packed lunch.

Personal Enrichment

Some classes may require textbooks, supplies, laptops or other equipment that are not included in the course fees. Please refer to the Section Notes in the course listing and your enrollment confirmation message for more information.
