Course Overview

The Grant Research and Writing Certificate program is for anyone seeking to learn the essentials in learning about writing grants for private, public, or government use. You will learn how to create documents that use explanation, description and intentional direction in order to persuade and direct your readers.

Introduction to Grant Research

This course covers the diverse types of grants that are available. Study the various types of corporate, nonprofit, educational and government grants that are available. Learn how to research a variety of funding sources and how to get started with the grant acquisition process.

Introduction to Grant Writing

This course equips students with the skills and tools necessary to enter the field of grant writing. It will cover the fundamental elements of a grant proposal such as the objectives, problems addressed, methodology, evaluation and assessments, budget and cover letter, as well as the members involved.

Specialized Techniques for Grant Writing

In this course you will learn that technical writing is a form of communication. You will learn to use it as a type of conversation as well as an interactive process that involves writers and readers who respond to one another. You will learn how to create documents that use explanation, description and intentional direction in order to persuade or direct your readers. You will learn how to develop concise and direct communication with your readers.

Technical Writing

Perfect for students pursuing careers in highly competitive fields like the sciences, education and those looking to begin a career as a professional grant writer. Topics include style and purpose, with focused practice and short writing assignments.

Advanced Grant Writing

Learn how to develop successful and highly fundable grant proposals. This class includes a separate lesson covering the potential pitfalls of the grant writing process.

Course Access Time

Students are given six (6) months to complete the program. Extensions are available if needed; fees may apply.


Students should have basic keyboarding and computer skills, be comfortable navigating the Internet and emailing and have an understanding of a word-processing computer program (Microsoft Word is recommended).
This program is intended for anyone interested in developing their grant writing skills.

There are no specific computer requirements other than an Internet connection (a high-speed or broadband Internet connection is highly recommended).

How do students interact with instructors?

All courses are taught by instructors who provide support for students usually through the online classroom and email. The instructor is responsible for facilitating student-tutor discussion, as well as answering students’ questions and reviewing and grading assignments and exams.

Do I need an email account for my online course?

Yes, all students taking online courses must have an email account. Email accounts may be obtained by signing up for a free account through a free internet service provider, such as Gmail,, Yahoo! Mail or

When it says a course is 200 hours long, does that mean I have to sit at my computer for 200 hours?

No, it means that the author of the course has stated that he or she expects you to be able to complete the course in 200 hours. This time frame may include homework, research, reading, or in some cases, additional development and reflection time.

What are the advantages to online learning?

With online learning, you can study from home or work. You can log on and off as often as you need to, and the course will pick up right where you left off. Also, you only learn what you want to know. Lastly, the courses are web-based, so you can log on from any computer that has access to the internet.

What kind of certificate do I get when I have completed the course?

Once you have completed your course, a Certificate of Completion will be sent from SMU PRO.

What if I need to suspend my attendance, cancel my registration, or withdraw?

For students paying via self-pay: SMU PRO Certificate program enrollment is final as of three (3) business days after enrollment and programs are intended to be successfully completed in full. If you wish to withdraw from a course within 3 days of enrollment you will receive a refund minus the cost of any completed course work. If applicable, any shipped materials must be returned in new condition, at your own expense, prior to the refund being processed. The cost of items not returned or returned in used condition shall be deducted from the refund amount. After the 3-day grace period, withdrawal from the programs or not completing the program forfeits your tuition costs. We do not provide any prorated refunds or credits for partial certificate program completion.
For students paying via a Sallie Mae Loan: SMU PRO Certificate program enrollment is final upon distribution of Sallie Mae funds to the university. No refunds are allowed once the funds have been received by the financial office. If a student wishes to withdraw from a program within the 14 days prior to loan distribution date, the student must submit their written request to withdraw from the program to for consideration. Once funds are secured by SMU, the student will be expected to fully participate in the program; failure to participate will forfeit tuition funding and the student will be expected to repay their loan per the conditions of the loan.

I am located in a country outside of the United States and would like to register for a course. What do I do?

Anyone is welcome to register for our online courses. Courses are in English.

Katherine Pang, Ph.D., J.D., LL.M., M.B.A., M.Ed., M.S.

Dr. Pang has instructed, facilitated, and led numerous business skills courses for several manufacturing companies including Weir SPM, Turbomeca, as well as the City of Arlington along with numerous Top-100 law firms.
She has served as a faculty member at the University of Texas at Tyler and has been an adjunct faculty member in the law and business schools of many universities, including the Stern School of Business at New York University; the Graduate School of Management at the University of Texas, Dallas; Pepperdine University; USC; Golden Gate University; the University of California, Irvine; Regent University; and Northeastern University. Dr. Pang received her B.A. from Clark University, a J.D. from the University of Dayton Law School, LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law School, M.Ed. from the University of Texas, M.B.A., M.S. (Psychology), and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M, Commerce. Dr. Pang also has two theology degrees.
Dr. Pang has over 20 years of entrepreneurial and operational experience in professional services, and manufacturing- and education-oriented companies. Prior to forming Corporate Growth Strategists, Dr. Pang was recruited to serve as COO/CFO and General Counsel for a Dallas-based CNC precision and assembly manufacturing company and was later promoted to interim CEO and General Counsel for a period of 12 months. Additionally, she served as COO and General Counsel for Technology Training Services Corporation, a technology training company delivering services in Europe under US Government contracts, and held the position as Manager, Firmwide Practice Section Development, Training and Forms for Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, L.L.P., in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Pang has over 20 years of experience in the design, development and delivery of educational courses and professional development and training content. She has been the CEO and Founder of three companies in the field of applied skills, active learning both in an ILT, CBT and web-based environment. She served as an SME for over 65 business and law-related courses and currently serves in a consulting capacity for various institutions and organizations in designing and developing curricula, adopting new technologies, integrating technology with instruction and implementing training and professional education programs.
