The SMU Center for Presidential History partners with Essential History Expeditions and SMU Abroad to offer a unique opportunity for SMU Students and the Dallas community to join together for once-in-a-lifetime history adventures. Led by CPH Director Jeffrey A. Engel and Essential History Expeditions’ Brian DeToy, these intergenerational tours offer students an option to study abroad and earn three credit hours, and also giving alumni and friends of the CPH the opportunity to join in the exploration of places where history happened (and to relive a bit of college life!).
Texas Presidential Tour – May 17-22, 2021 (Alumni & Friends)
Presidential history runs deep in Texas, from the birthplaces of Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Baines Johnson to the foundational stories of LBJ, George HW Bush and George W Bush. From the Presidents of the Republic of Texas era to the last moments of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Presidential history in the Lone Star State is, indeed, Texas-sized, with three Presidential Libraries and Museums residing here. The SMU Center for Presidential History and Essential History Expeditions have teamed to offer an in-depth examination of Texas presidents.
Pearl Harbor 80th Anniversary – December 2-8, 2021 (Alumni & Friends)
This Pearl Harbor guided tour will take us to the island of Oahu in Hawaii to examine the beginnings of America’s involvement in the great struggle. We will visit two ships, lying end-to-end, that encapsulate the war – the USS Arizona, under its memorial, where the war began that terrible Sunday morning, and the USS Missouri, on whose decks the allies accepted complete Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. We will also see numerous other sites of the war, from ships, submarines and aircraft to Army garrisons and mountain observation points. We will attend several significant WWII remembrance events throughout the week, and incorporate them into the itinerary as the schedule is announced.
Czech and Germany in World War II and the Cold War – May 16-26, 2022 (SMU Undergraduate Travel Course with Alumni & Friends)
Southern Methodist University’s (SMU’s) Center for Presidential History’s Jeffrey A. Engel and Essential History Expeditions’ Brian DeToy are pleased to partner for an on-site exploration of Prague, Nuremberg, Dresden, Leipzig and Berlin, walking the cities and fields where soldiers fought for Europe’s liberation and spies schemed for generations to create a new world order. This intergenerational tour offers three credits for students, and for alumni and friends the opportunity to see the places history took place — and to relive a bit of college life.
