Raised overseas, in the Amazonian lowlands of northern Bolivia. Worked in community development helping an indigenous riverine society learn to negotiate the legal and commercial aspects of taking their own produce to local markets. Also worked together with local teachers, encouraging them to extend numeracy and literacy to adult members of their society.

Worked together with Ma'di Language Writer's Association towards orthographic reform in northern Uganda from 1994-1997.

Graduated with a BS in physical education in 1980. MA in Linguistics from UT Arlington in 1992. MA in Anthropology from SMU in 2008.

Adjunct Professor of Linguistic Anthropology SMU 2012-2013; Adjunct Professor Anthropology GIAL 2012-2013.

Title of Dissertation: "Understanding the Lives of Ma'di Men and Women Through the Names they Give their Children"
