October 14, 2022 - SMU Aware Message

SMU Police have made an arrest in a sexual assault that occurred overnight on campus.

At approximately 2:20 this morning, SMU Police responded to a report of a sexual assault that occurred in the 3100-block of Daniel Avenue. The victim told police she was sexually assaulted by a rideshare driver who had driven her to campus. She also notified family members who later observed the suspect’s vehicle and flagged down a Dallas police officer. The Dallas officer followed the car to a location on Greenville Avenue and detained the driver. SMU Police made the arrest and booked him into the Dallas County Jail on charges of sexual assault.

This is an active investigation. While there is no ongoing threat to the University community related to this incident, please keep in mind the following important personal safety reminders.

We encourage you to consider these safety tips whether you are on or off campus:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Be mindful of individuals around you.
  • Trust your instincts. If someone approaches you and you feel unsafe, go to a place of safety immediately.
  • Do not argue, provoke, or allow a verbal conflict to escalate.
  • Get away or create distance if you feel threatened.

10/12/2022 - SMU Aware message - UPDATED 10/14/2022

SMU Police report at approximately 2:30 pm on 10/12/22, a female student reported being approached by a man driving a gray 4-door sedan on SMU Blvd, east of Central Expressway.

The male subject offered to give the student a ride. Once in the vehicle, the male subject requested sex and refused to let the victim out of his vehicle until she gave him her phone number.

The suspect is described as a male Hispanic, approximately 40 years old with light brown hair, mustache and beard, with multiple tattoos covering both arms. He was wearing a multi-colored shirt and shorts, and was last seen nearby Heroy Hall, driving away from campus.

UPDATE:  SMU Police have arrested an unaffiliated man for the unlawful restraint of a female student on Wednesday.  The arrest followed an SMU Warning issued with a description of the suspect and car. The suspect was booked into the Dallas County Jail.
