Training Requirements

SMU faculty, staff, and students conducting research with human participants must complete and maintain valid Human Subjects Research (HSR) training through CITI Program.

This requirement applies to all Principal Investigators (PIs), student PIs and their Faculty Advisors, and all other study personnel listed on the IRB application.

All study personnel must complete the applicable HSR training courses below in CITI Program before a study can receive IRB approval or an Exempt determination:

  • "SBE Human Subject Research (HSR)" – This course is required for all social-behavioral-educational researchers.
  • "Biomedical Human Subject Research (HSR)"– This course is required for all biomedical researchers.
  • "Good Clinical Practice (GCP)" – This course is required for all researchers conducting a clinical trial.

Completion of HSR training is required every 4 years.

CITI Program FAQ

  1. Go to CITI Program SSO Login Page
  2. Search for and select Southern Methodist University
  3. Log in using your SMU NetID and password
  4. Click to create a CITI Program account
  5. Complete the Learner Registration steps. This will include selecting the appropriate training (i.e., Human Subjects Research (HSR))
  6. Answer the additional questions based on your role and research activities; your responses will determine your assigned course(s) and learner group (e.g., Faculty/Staff Investigator, Research Staff, Student Investigator)
  7. Your assigned trainings will appear under Courses Ready to Begin in your My Courses. Click on Start Now and complete all required modules

When you initially create a CITI account, you are enrolled in courses based on your responses in the Learner Registration. If you need to add or remove courses after your account has been created:

  • Adding a Training: Click Add a Course in the Learner Tools section to enroll in additional courses.
  • Removing a Training: Click Remove a Course in the Learner Tools section to remove a course.

You will receive automated expiration email notifications before your training expires. To renew your training:

  2. Courses pending renewal will appear under Courses Ready to Begin
  3. Click Start Now to begin the course

After logging in, your starting point will be the My Courses page, where your completed courses are listed by institution.

Once you are enrolled in your SMU CITI courses, any modules that are shared between your previous institution and SMU will automatically transfer to SMU CITI credit. This transfer is based on each module’s unique ID number. If the courses do not match exactly, some credits may not transfer, and you may need to complete additional modules to receive a full Completion Report.

If your previous institution does not appear in your list of affiliations, click on Add an Affiliation to add it. Once you add your previous institution as an affiliate, the courses will transfer into your SMU CITI account.

You can access your training completion records in the My Records tab, which includes all courses completed under your account.

To view or download your completion documents, select View-Print-Share under the Completion Record.

CITI Program provides two types of completion documents:

  • Completion Reports: Detailed transcripts that include quiz scores
  • Completion Certificates: Summary documents (diplomas) that confirm completion (no quiz scores; typically preferred for sharing)

This is usually due to one of the following reasons:

  1. Timing: CITI training can take up to one business day (24 hours) to appear in Cayuse Human Ethics, as records sync nightly.
  2. Email mismatch: Your primary email address in CITI must be your “@smu.edu” address. Other formats (e.g., “@mail.smu.edu”) may not sync correctly. Ensure your institutional email is listed correctly in your CITI profile for the automated transfer to work.

If you are adding an External Individual Investigator* to an IRB study, they are required to complete Human Subjects Research (HSR) training.

If they are unable to access or complete CITI training on their own, SMU can sponsor a CITI account at no cost. To request this, contact Research Integrity & Compliance (RIC) with the individual’s full name, email address, and associated IRB study. RIC will create the account and preload the required HSR training so the individual can log in and begin.

*External Individual Investigators are individuals engaged in research activities NOT on behalf of their institution or individuals at organizations that do not have an IRB (e.g., independent contractors, consultants, community partners).
