We are excited to celebrate our students' tremendous accomplishments at the SMU Dedman School of Law Hooding Ceremony. Important information about the hooding ceremony and related events can be found on this page:

Livestream: Watch the livestream of SMU Dedman School of Law’s Graduation Ceremony on Friday, May 15 beginning at 11:30 AM.

Regalia: You may order your academic regalia online now. The deadline to place your order is Friday, April 17, 2026. Your order will be sent to your home address. Please select “Law Degrees” on the online form under Cap and Gown. At a minimum, you must order the graduation regalia for $210.94, which includes a tam, gown, tassel, and hood (purple). There are also a number of packages available with announcements and thank you notes. If you or your family hooder do not receive your regalia in early May, or receive an incorrect item, go to the bookstore (3060 Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75205) immediately to get a replacement.

Students should wear their robe and tam to the Dedman Center when they report on the day of graduation. They will carry their hood into the ceremony. Watch the video to learn more and see how regalia is to be worn. You will be standing and walking from one building to another, so make sure you wear comfortable footwear. 

Family Hooders: A longstanding tradition of SMU Dedman School of Law has been for a family member to participate in their graduate's ceremony as a "family hooder." Family hooders MUST be graduates/alumni of SMU Dedman School of Law. They can be a husband, wife, mother, father, sister, brother, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, father-in-law, uncle, aunt, child, cousin, grandparent, stepmother, stepfather, stepbrother or stepsister. See the Family Hooder Information Form for more information. Family hooders should report to the Miller Event Center by 10:00 AM on the day of graduation.

Hooding Ceremony: The law school’s Hooding Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 15 at 11:30 AM in Moody Coliseum. Please be aware of the Clear Bag Policy for Moody Coliseum. Please note also there will be no strollers or child car seats permitted in Moody. 

Guests: Tickets are not required and there is no limit to the number of guests a student may bring, but at some point we will reach capacity.

Schedule:

Thursday, May 14
• 2:00–3:00 PM: Pro Bono Honor Roll Ceremony, Karcher Auditorium
• 3:30–4:30 PM: Order of the Coif Ceremony, Karcher Auditorium
• 5:00–7:00 PM: Cocktail Reception for all graduates and their families, Frontiers of Flight Museum

Friday, May 15
• 10:00 AM: Graduates arrive at the Dedman Center wearing regalia
• 10:30 AM: Doors open for the Law School Hooding Ceremony, Moody Coliseum
• 11:30 AM–1:30 PM: Law School Hooding Ceremony, Moody Coliseum
The ceremony typically lasts about two hours and will be live streamed for family and friends who cannot attend.
• 7:00 PM: All-University Commencement, Ford Stadium (optional)
Graduates may invite as many family members and friends as they would like. Additional details on schedules, ticketing, and logistics will be shared soon.

Parking: All parking garages and lots are available during graduation, and an SMU permit is not required. The closest garages are the Binkley Parking Center and the Moody Parking Center.
