Student stories

Terrence Alexander is a 2019 graduate of the Religious Studies program at SMU.

Terrance Alexander ’19

“While my finance degree gave me the technical tools to understand how the world works, religious studies taught me why people move the way they do,” said Alexander, a consultant at Boston Consulting Group. “It taught me how to think critically, challenge ‘objective’ truths, and understand the power of perception. In a global business landscape, the ability to interpret diverse motivations is a superpower. Whether I was writing a critical defense of a character in the Ramayana or now helping a CEO pivot their corporate strategy, the core skill is the same: understanding the story, the interpretation, and the people behind them. If you want to graduate with the ability to see the world through a lens of empathy and high-level critical analysis, this is the program for you.”

Faculty

The faculty in the Religious Studies Department offers a rigorous, well-balanced program in four areas: philosophical studies of religious ideas and values, historical studies of religious movements and institutions, social-scientific studies of religious beliefs and behavior, and textual studies of religious traditions and scriptures.
