University Training Compliance at SMU
SMU is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and compliant work environment for all members of our community. As part of this commitment, all employees are required to complete certain online training courses. These trainings help ensure compliance with federal and state laws, reinforce university policies, and promote a culture of safety, responsibility, and respect.
Completion of required training is a condition of employment and must be completed within the timeframe assigned.
Required Online Training for All New Employees
All new SMU employees are required to complete the following online courses:
Courses Accessible in the Employee Vector System
- Harassment and Discrimination Prevention
Provides an overview of SMU’s commitment to a respectful workplace, outlines prohibited conduct, and explains employees’ rights and responsibilities under applicable laws and university policy.
- SMU Program for the Protection of Minors
Ensures employees understand their responsibilities when interacting with minors, including mandatory reporting obligations and best practices for creating safe environments.
- Data Security and Privacy
Covers essential information on safeguarding sensitive and confidential data, including personal, academic, and institutional information, and outlines employees’ responsibilities related to data protection.
- FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)
Explains federal requirements related to the privacy of student education records and how these requirements apply to employees in their day-to-day work.
Course Accessible in the Risk Management Vector System
- Active Threat Training
Provides guidance on how to recognize, respond to, and report potential threats, with the goal of enhancing personal safety and campus preparedness.
Additional Training Requirements
In addition to the courses listed above, employees may be assigned additional training based on their specific job responsibilities, department requirements, or regulatory obligations. These assignments will be communicated through the applicable Vector training system.
