The Baptist House of Studies at Perkins is excited to be hosting the following upcoming events.

2020 Shurden Lectures

March 5, 2020

The BHS will host the Baptist Joint Committee’s 15th Annual Walter B. and Kay W. Shurden Lecture on Religious Liberty and Separation of Church & State on March 5, 2020, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. on the SMU campus. The 2020 Shurden Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Eboo Patel.

The event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required. Lunch is $10, payable at the door,and a parking pass will be provided to those who RSVP. Read the full press release here.

Eboo Patel is the Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), a non-profit organization that is working to make interfaith cooperation a social norm in America. He is the author of four books and dozens of articles, has spoken on more than 150 campuses, and served on President Obama’s Inaugural Faith Council.

A key figure on issues of religious diversity and democracy, Eboo was named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report in 2009. He is the author of Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation; Sacred Ground: Pluralism, Prejudice, and the Promise of America; Interfaith Leadership: A Primer; and Out of Many Faiths: Religious Diversity and the American Promise. He also publishes a regular blog for Inside Higher Ed, called ‘Conversations on Diversity’.

Eboo holds a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford University, where he studied on a Rhodes scholarship. He has been awarded the Louisville Grawemeyer Prize in Religion, the Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize, the El Hibri Peace Education Prize, the Council of Independent Colleges Academic Leadership Award, along with honorary degrees from 15 colleges.

Eboo lives in Chicago with his wife, Shehnaz, and two young sons. He is a die-hard fan of Notre Dame Football, Wilco, and really good coffee.

Baptist House Gathering at the Home of Dean Hill

September 17, 2019

On September 17, 2019, at 7:00PM the Baptist House of Studies will hold a dessert gathering at the home of Perkins Dean Craig Hill. If you are a Baptist, UCC, Disciples, or Nondenominational Perkins student, please join us to learn more about the new Baptist House of Studies at Perkins! Please feel free to bring a significant other.

This event is free. If possible, RSVP to Baptist House Assistant Lindsay Bruehl at lbreuhl@smu.edu. Lindsay will provide the Dean's address and parking instructions.

Amanda Tyler at Perkins

October 3, 2019

On October 3, 2019, the BHS will host Amanda Tyler, Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, for Perkins Chapel at 11:30AM. Amanda will preach "The Temptation of Christian Nationalism: Power Brokers over Prophets" using Luke 4:1–20 as her text. Chapel is to be followed by Lunch and Conversation with Amanda Tyler on the subject of Resisting Christian Nationalism from 12:00–1:15PM. All events will take place in the Great Hall, Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Hall. Chapel is open to the public. Amanda Tyler is the executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty in Washington, D.C. She leads BJC as it upholds the historic Baptist principle of religious liberty, defending the free exercise of religion and protecting against its establishment by government.

Tyler often speaks in churches, educational institutions and denominational gatherings, and she provides commentary on church-state issues to the media. Called a “powerful advocate” and “rising star in the sector” by The Nonprofit Times, she was named one of the nation’s top 50 nonprofit leaders in 2018. A member of the Texas and U.S. Supreme Court Bar, she has experience working in Congress, in a private legal practice and serving as a law clerk for a federal judge.
