Featuring Latina feminist Daisy Machado, political sociologist Eduardo Bonilla-Silva and biblical scholar Fernando Segovia

The Center for the Study of Latino/a Christianity and Religions of Perkins School of Theology/SMU will host a free, two-day event that will gather Latinx scholars, artists, religious leaders and community activists to explore how academic research, religious practices, the arts, and public engagement address the current social climate of Latino/a-phobia, gendered and race-based public policy. Come and dialogue that, together, we might find solidarity in our work for a future marked by Divine compassion.

*Translation into Spanish will be available for all parts of the event except for "Elvira: The Immigration Play."

Dr. Fernando Segovia, Oberlin Graduate Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Vanderbilt Divinity School, will be the featured keynote speaker at the Roy Barton Lecture. Dr. Segovia's research encompasses early Christian origins, theological studies, and cultural studies. His research interests include the history of the Biblical discipline and its construction of early Christian antiquity, non-Western Christian theologies, especially from Latin America and the Caribbean, postcolonial studies and minority studies. He is also a past president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians in the United States.

Dr. Daisy Machado from Union Theological Seminary of NYC and Dr. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva of Duke University are also featured keynote speakers. The first day of the event, led by Dr. Machado, will focus on how current events happening on the U.S. - Mexico border impact women. In the evening, a performance of the original play, “Elvira: The Immigration Play” by NYC Latina playwright Jessica Carmona will be staged. The second day, led by Dr. Bonilla-Silva, will focus on racism and the rising nativism in the U.S. that is shaping culture, politics, economics and faith.
