SCUV Frequently Asked Questions

1.     Who does this policy and associated procedures apply to?

All operators are required to have training, including all students, employees, contractors, and SMU volunteers. Registration applies to all carts that are on campus for longer than 41 days.   Short-term rentals (less than 41 days) also have labeling and marking requirements, but no registration.

2.     What are the operator requirements?

  • Training provided by the Office of Risk Management
  • A valid driver’s license
  • A clean motor vehicle report

3.     How often is training required?

Every three years.

4.     How can look up my training records?

Training records for SMU employees and students are available at my.smu.edu>Learning Development.  Scroll down to “Other Professional Training”.   Depending on the delivery method, the course will be entitled either “SMU Golf Cart Safety” if delivered in person or “Golf Cart Safety” if offered online.  Note that the online version is no longer offered.  Contractors can reach out to the Office of Risk Management for their training records.

5.     Where can I register for training?

A training calendar is maintained at the Office of Risk Management Training website with sessions offered on a monthly basis. Please search for “SCUV Safety Training”.   If you have a large group that needs training, please reach out directly to Jonathan Dowd at jddowd@smu.edu.

6.     Where should I park my SCUV or LSV?

Parking areas where these SCUVs and LSVs can park is very limited.   There are open paver areas or pads near various buildings on campus but note that these may not be adjacent to the building you are accessing.   Some garages and departments have designated areas for cart parking for their specific carts.  SMU is currently assessing parking for carts on campus and more information will be coming soon.

Carts cannot be parked in the following areas:

  • Vehicle parking spaces of any kind
  • Within 10 feet of building entrances, fire hydrants, or standpipes
  • Areas that block a crosswalk, loading dock, fire lane, stairs, access ramps, or in curb cuts.
  • Grassy and landscaped areas should be avoided
  • Within a building envelope or under overhangs unless specifically designated

7.     How can I go about purchasing a street-legal cart (LSV/NEV) for accessing East Campus and SMU properties south of Mockingbird?

Please contact Purchasing at purchasing@smu.edu

8.     How long are cart-permits valid for?

Two years.   The current valid permits for 2023-2025 are teal in color.

9.     Who can I contact with other questions?

Please contact Gloria Ruiz-Research Safety Manager.
