BookClub

We are excited to announce that The W.W. Caruth, Jr. Child Advocacy Clinic at SMU Dedman School of Law and the Dallas Bar Association’s Juvenile Justice Committee will now take its new “Child Welfare Book Club” virtual. We will read books that are pertinent to professionals who work with children in the legal system or otherwise. We will endeavor to obtain continuing education credits in connection with our meetings for the professionals who indicate to us in advance that they will participate. The current plan is to hold the meetings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. about once a month via Zoom.

The first book we will read and discuss is the New York Times Bestseller, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, by Bessel Ven Der Kolk, M.D. Our plan is to cover this book over three meetings. In the first meeting, planned for June 25, 2020 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., we will discuss Parts 1 and 2 (pages 1-89). For lawyers, we expect to secure 1.0 hours of Ethics C.L.E. Continuing professional education credit also has been applied for on behalf of the following non-lawyer groups:

  • Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)
  • Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors (LPC)
  • Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners (MSW)

All attendees seeking CEU accreditation must check with their licensing board to ensure CEU approval is given.

There will be no fee to participate. Please reply in the below survey if you would like to attend and participate in this inaugural meeting. You will need to purchase or borrow your own copy of the book.
