Awarded for the best undergraduate essay in ethics, broadly defined to include political philosophy, philosophy of law, and applied ethics.
Established in 2018, the award honors Professor Steven W.B. Sverdlik for his contributions to SMU and the fields of ethics, moral philosophy, and philosophy of law. A member of the faculty from 1982 to 2017, Professor Sverdlik is the author of numerous books and scholarly works and was recognized with multiple teaching and research honors during his career.

Presented to the student in The History of Western Philosophy: Ancient or Modern whose work best exemplifies original and creative philosophical thinking. The recipient receives a monetary award and a certificate of achievement.
The award honors Professor David B. Hausman, a longtime faculty member whose distinguished career included teaching, scholarship, and university leadership. A widely published scholar, he served on the faculty for more than five decades and held roles including Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Chair of Faculty for General Education, Associate Dean for General Education, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Awarded for an outstanding philosophy essay by an undergraduate student. Any undergraduate may apply, whether the paper was written for a class or independently. Submissions should clearly indicate the award sought and include a separate cover sheet with the student's name and essay title.
Established in 1974 through a gift from Billy Jack Glascock and Rose Ann Sparkman, the award honors Dr. Glenister C. Hoskins, a longtime SMU philosophy professor and administrator who served on the faculty from 1948 until his retirement in 1977.
