The William P. Clements Department of History faculty are dedicated teachers and distinguished scholars, specializing in fields that cover the globe.

The Department of History at SMU offers students critical and analytical skills essential not only to the discipline of history but also to their future careers.

The department offers a strong major and minor in history, with an array of undergraduate courses, recognized as both popular and challenging. At the graduate level, we offer an M.A. and a Ph.D. in American and global historical themes. We invite you to explore our educational programs, faculty research, and departmental events.

The Department of History is pleased to offer distinguished lectures and events series throughout the year.


The department offers opportunities to earn up to three credit hours for an approved internship. In the past, our students have interned with the Dallas Jewish Historical Society, the George W. Bush Institute, and elsewhere.
