On Thursday, March 29th, the SMU Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility will present Dr. Bobby B. Lyle with the 2018 J. Erik Jonsson Ethics Award. Named in honor of the esteemed former Mayor of Dallas, this award serves to commend a member of our community who personifies the highest values of moral leadership and public virtue.
Bobby Lyle is renowned within the Dallas community. He serves in leadership positions on numerous boards ranging from the Boys Scouts of America to The Salvation Army, and he gives generously to support the efforts of leading philanthropic organizations whose missions are to better our community. From the Texas Trees foundation to the Communities Foundation of Texas, Bobby leads by the example of dedication to the cause and plain, old-fashioned hard work. Always top of mind is the question, “Will this have a positive impact on the people in our community?” His service-minded leadership is devoted to achieving results, which is no doubt an outgrowth of his skills in strategic planning. Already, Bobby has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, Volunteer Now, and the Dallas Historical Society. In addition, he has been recognized with the Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award from Methodist Health System, inducted into the Dallas Business Hall of Fame by Jr. Achievement, and presented the William Booth Award by The Salvation Army for his contributions to the betterment of humanity. Throughout his career, Bobby’s special focus on the development of professional and organizational ethics has been exceptional. For all of the above and other reasons too numerous to mention Bobby Lyle was chosen as the 2018 recipient of the J. Erik Jonsson Ethics Award.
Throughout his career, Bobby’s passion for his alma mater and education has remained constant. As a member of the SMU board of trustees for more than 26 years, he has served as chair or vice chair of numerous university standing committees and boards, including the Audit Committee, the Cox Associate Board, the Maguire Energy Institute and the Maguire Center. He is past president of the SMU Alumni Association and has been vice chair of the executive boards of both the Cox School of Business and the Lyle School of Engineering. He has received the SMU Distinguished Alumni Award, been recognized as Alumni Volunteer of the Year, and twice named Outstanding Trustee of the Year by the SMU Student Association. He was inducted into the School of Engineering Hall of Leaders in 2006, and given the coveted Mustang Award in 2012. In 2008, SMU named the Lyle School of Engineering in his honor.
Innovative engineer, educator, corporate executive, entrepreneur, civic leader and philanthropist all accurately describe Dr. Bobby Lyle, whose multifaceted career has spanned six decades. It is the Maguire Ethics Center’s absolute joy and privilege to honor Bobby Lyle and share his life’s work and commitment to ethics with the Dallas community.
