Must have published an article in a mainstream, non-religious publication, as determined by the Awards Panel.  Article must contain at least one passage of scripture and have been published between January 1 and December 31 of the current calendar year.

January 15Harding Foundation Scholarship

Three to five scholarships are available annually to students working toward their Master of Divinity degree who plan to enter the ministry of a mainline Protestant church. Special consideration is given to those who are willing to serve in the Rio Grande Conference and the Southwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church. Scholarships are effective for three years or until the student graduates.

February 10Maguire and Irby Family Public Service Internships

Summer internships to develop and implement a community service project addressing a significant need at the local, state, national and international level.  Internships can be developed for a non-profit agency, a religious congregation, an educational organization, health care organization, or some other institution that offers a public service.  For chosen interns, the salary is $10 per hour for graduate students for not more than 200 hours for the entire summer.

March 1Eastern Star Training Awards For Religious Leadership (ESTARL)

Awards for student preparing for leadership in a field of religious service, such as ministry, missionary work, religious education, and/or youth work.  Need not be a member of Masonic or Eastern Star organizations, however an Eastern Star Chapter must be willing to sponsor the candidate.  Requirements vary from state to state.

March 1General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM)

The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) offers various scholarships utilizing one application. Students must have been an active member of the United Methodist Church for 1 year to apply. Award amounts vary but are usually from $1,000 to $2,000. Below are the scholarships available:

Baltimore Washington Conference Sophia Dietsch Education Scholarship:  Baltimore City resident; in the candidacy process 

Baltimore Washington Scholarship Merit Fund:  full-time student; must be a member of the Baltimore-Washington Conference

Baltimore Washington Conference Francis Asbury Scholarship:  full-time student; child of a pastor; must be a member of the Baltimore-Washington Conference

Baltimore Washington Conference Board of Trustees/Merit Scholarship:  based on need, GPA, and finances; must be a member of the Baltimore-Washington Conference

Charles W. Tadlock Scholarship:  certified candidate for ordination as an elder; second year of seminary; M.Div. candidate; GPA 3.0+

The Clinical Pastoral Education - Ethnic In Service Training (EIST) Stipend:  racial-ethnic minority student; clergy, certified candidate, or seminary student accepted into an accredited Clinical Pastor Education (CPE) or an accredited American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) program

Diaconia Graduate Fellowship:  commissioned deacon candidates, deacons, or diaconal ministers

E. Craig Brandenburg:  over age 35; second career

Georgia Harkness:  female; age 35+; M.Div. candidate; certified candidate for the elder track; second career

John Q. Schisler Scholarship:  Christian education; preparing for Ordained Deacon or lay professional; 3 year membership in UMC

Journey Toward Ordained Ministry:  racial-ethnic minority student; pursuing ordained ministry (deacon or elder); age 30 and younger; minimum of 2 years membership in the UMC

Miriam Hoffman Scholarship:  music ministry

Native American Seminary:  Native American students; 3 year membership in the UMC; certified candidate or pursuing candidacy

Special Seminary Scholarship:  pursuing ordained ministry; certified candidate; age 30 or younger

March 1Harold H. Wilke Scholarship FundThe Harold Wilke Scholarship, established in 1981, honors the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Wilke, a devoted minister, disability advocate and pioneer. Annual scholarships are available to assist gifted persons with disabilities and/or those directly involved in service to persons with disabilities further their education or training. Applicants must be pursuing a degree or educational certification and may be from the United States or other countries.

March 1Rev. Virginia Kreyer Endowed Scholarship for Theological EducationThe Rev. Virginia Kreyer Endowed Scholarship for Theological Education: for Persons with Disabilities Called to Authorized Ministry was created in 2010 by the UCC’s Disabilities Ministries. This scholarship fund will help defray the cost of tuition, assistive devices, specialized software, hardware, specialized services, specialized assistants, transportation, and adapted vehicles.

Available to individuals of all faiths enrolled in a college music program leading to a career in the ministry of music.  Award based on merit.

    Applicant must be legally blind and either pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time post-secondary course of study.  Must demonstrate academic excellence, service to the community and financial need.

    April 1The Fund for Theological Education Ministry Congregational Fellowships

    Candidates are entering M.Div. students with 3.0 GPA, preparing for pastoral ministry. Students must be under the age of 35 and nominated by their congregation.  Church will commit to $2,000-$5,000, to be matched by FTE.

    April 1Shepherd Scholarship

    Scholarship for students studying for degrees in fields perceived as "benefiting the human race". Selectees will be those who are best qualified by dedication, ambition, academic preparation, financial need, and promise of outstanding performance at the advanced level. It will be helpful if each candidate has shown sincere interest in and taken an active part in social, civic, religious, and fraternal activities of the community.

    April 13The Fund for Theological Education Volunteers Exploring Vocation Fellowships

    Recent college graduate who has participated in one of 10 national faith-based volunteer programs partnering with FTE in its Volunteers Exploring Vocation initiative, and who are entering a Master of Divinity program. Candidates are recommended by supervisors in their respective VEV programs.

    Member of Protestant denomination who attends school in the state of Texas.  Must demonstrate worthiness, show financial need and have acquired above average grades.  Studying to become missionaries, religious workers or ministers.  Part or full-time students.

    June 1ETHEL LOUISE ARMSTRONG FOUNDATION, INC. ELA Scholarships are available only to women graduate students with physical disabilities who are enrolled in a college or university in the United States. These scholarships are awarded on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis.   ELA will award scholarships depending on academic and leadership merit. The purpose of the scholarship is to supplement financial assistance for tuition costs for female graduate students with physical disabilities. Scholarships are between $1,000 and $2,000 and are awarded in August. Only the recipients will be notified (by mail). Their names will also be posted on the ELA news portion of the website. The scholarship money is contingent upon the recipient's acceptance to, or continuation in, an accredited college or university graduate program.range up to a maximum of $1,000 to $2,000 per year

    To provide funding to seminarians seeking to strengthen their theological education by participating in social programs concerned with important human needs.  Must be a student in an ATS accredited school and requires an application form and references.  Committed to be engaged directly in some area of social concern, such as civil rights, anti-racism, fair housing, community organization, or environmental issues.

    Grants are made to graduate student primarily based upon financial need, but also upon merit. Preference is given to individuals connected to Mount Olivet UMC, to the UMC, to individuals from Arlington, Northern Virginia, or the Washington DC Metropolitan area, but if there are sufficient funds, others will be considered.

    Scholarship to assist with ministry education costs for those studying to become Pastors or Missionaries.  Up to fifty (50) one time awards given per year.

    December 15American Association of University Women (AAUW)

    Career Development Grants support women who hold a bachelor's degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields.

    Grants provide support for course work beyond a bachelor's degree, including a master's degree, second bachelor's degree, or specialized training in technical or professional fields. Funds are available for distance learning. Course work must be taken at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Funds are not available for PhD-level work.
