We are excited to celebrate our students' tremendous accomplishments at the SMU Dedman School of Law Hooding Ceremony. Important information about the hooding ceremony and related events can be found on this page:
Regalia: Wednesday, April 12 was the deadline to order academic regalia. If you or your family hooder have not received regalia, or received an incorrect item, you should go to the bookstore (3060 Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75205) immediately to get a replacement. The law school's regalia is shown below. Watch the video to learn more and see how regalia is to be worn.
Students should wear their robe and tam to the Dedman Center when they report on the day of graduation. They will carry their hood into the ceremony. Permitted adornments are limited to gold honors cords; white coifs for Order of the Coif; Order of the Barristers medals; red, white, and blue veterans’ cords; and pins for the business law concentration. No other adornments are permitted.
Family Hooders: A longstanding tradition of SMU Dedman School of Law has been for a family member to participate in their graduate's ceremony as a "family hooder." Family hooders MUST be graduates/alumni of SMU Dedman School of Law. They can be a husband, wife, mother, father, sister, brother, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, father-in-law, uncle, aunt, child, cousin, grandparent, step mother, step father, step brother or step sister. Family hooders should report to the Miller Event Center by 1:30 p.m. on the day of graduation.
Hooding Ceremony: The law school’s Hooding Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. Tickets are not required and there is no limit to the number of guests a student may bring. The schedule for graduation weekend is as follows:
• Thursday, May 11 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.: Cocktail Reception for graduates and their families at Union Station
• Friday, May 12 at 11:00 a.m.: The law school's tempietto will be decorated with flowers and available for students to take graduation pictures. The flowers will remain in place through the end of the day on Saturday.
• Friday, May 12 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.: Law School Hooding Ceremony in Moody Coliseum. The ceremony typically lasts about two hours. The ceremony will be live-streamed for family and friends that cannot attend.
• Saturday, May 13 at 8:30 a.m.: All-University Commencement in Moody Coliseum. Attendance is optional but this is a wonderful ceremony that is well worth attending. Candidate and guest tickets (limit of 2) are required for this event. Students may request tickets beginning Tuesday, April 25 at 9:30 a.m.
Parking: All parking garages and lots are available during graduation, and an SMU permit is not required. The closest garages are the Binkley Parking Center and the Moody Parking Center.
