‘American Meat’ at Hughes-Trigg on Feb 19

Film examines U.S. chicken, cattle, and hog production

DALLAS (SMU) – American Meat, a documentary that looks at issues surrounding the production of American meat through the eyes of farmers, will be screened at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Forum. The screening is free and sponsored by Chipotle and SMU’s Students For a Better Society and Environmental Society.

The evening will start with a “meet and greet” opportunity at 7:30 p.m., followed by the film at 8 p.m. and a brief panel discussion at 9:30 p.m. All attendees will receive a card from Chipotle that can be exchanged for a free burrito.

American Meat examines the animal feedlots and confinement operations that dominate the current American industrial system, through the eyes of the farmers in that system. The story shifts to a farm where a family has developed an alternative agricultural model based on rotational grazing and local distribution. The film describes a system in crisis, asking questions about the survival of an industry debating mass production, free range operations, organic products, affordability and sustainability.
