Second Language Placement Tests

At SMU, in languages we use combinations of external test scores or placement tests to help determine undergraduate student enrollment.

Placement testing determines your current level of skills and knowledge in a particular language to help set you up for success. Review the table and instructions below on current classical, modern, and American Sign Language placement tests and their applicability. 

Placement test details

The Second Language Requirement at SMU can be fulfilled by achieving a score of Intermediate-Mid or above on the OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) examination or a score of 3 or above on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) examination.
