Perkins School of Theology and McMurry University Agree to Accelerated Degree Program

DALLAS (SMU) – Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and McMurry University have entered into a dual-degree program agreement, effective Dec. 1, 2025. This agreement will allow qualified students from McMurry University who are pursuing a Master of Divinity to transfer to SMU.

“This extension and expansion of our relationship with McMurry University is an exciting and forward-thinking venture that will enable students to complete a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in a shorter period of time with tremendous financial savings,” said Dr. Bryan Stone, Dean of Perkins School of Theology. “This agreement embodies our shared United Methodist heritage and our dedication to educating the next generation of Christian ministers who will serve the church and the world in new ways that we can scarcely begin to imagine.”

Students who are projected to successfully complete curricular requirements at McMurry University may take select SMU courses during their final year. These courses will count toward a bachelor’s degree while allowing students to begin progress toward a Master of Divinity.

“This partnership opens doors for our students to pursue a respected and rigorous graduate theological education while completing their undergraduate degrees,” said Dr. Cynthia Martin, Vice President of Academic Affairs at McMurry University. “We are grateful to collaborate with an institution whose mission aligns so closely with our own commitment to preparing students for lives of leadership, service and ministry.”

McMurry University students who qualify for this program will gain access to the same resources and benefits as students from the Perkins School of Theology.

Continuing for a period of three years, the agreement furthers Perkins School of Theology’s goal of making theological education more accessible to prospective students, both financially and geographically.
