Perkins updates Certificate in Spiritual Direction program with entry-level format
DALLAS (SMU) – Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University (SMU) is accepting applications for its Certificate in Spiritual Direction program for fall 2026, introducing a new entry-level format designed to help participants explore the practice of spiritual direction before committing to the full certificate program.
The updated format begins with a three-hour introductory webinar that offers participants an opportunity to learn about the ministry of spiritual direction and discern whether they feel called to pursue further training. Completion of the webinar makes participants eligible to apply for a Certificate in Spiritual Direction cohort. A new cohort will launch this fall.
“This certificate reflects Perkins’ broader commitment to forming leaders for many kinds of ministry, including those quiet and often unseen ministries that sustain the spiritual life of individuals and communities,” said Bryan P. Stone, Leighton K. Farrell Endowed Dean of Perkins School of Theology. “We are grateful to offer this program with a format that is accessible and makes room for exploration and discernment.”
The Certificate in Spiritual Direction is a noncredit program designed for individuals called to the ministry of spiritual companionship. Through a cohort-based model, participants develop practices of prayerful listening, theological reflection and contemplative spirituality.
“We’re especially excited about this new format for the Dallas program because it invites participants into a richer, more immersive learning experience,” said Kaylee Vida, associate director of lifelong learning and director of the spiritual direction program. “The retreat-based model fosters deep relationships and meaningful formation in a beautiful, contemplative setting, while the combination of retreats and online learning makes the program accessible to a wide range of participants.”
Beginning in 2026, new Dallas cohorts will launch every other September, alternating with Arkansas cohorts. The hybrid program includes three in-person retreats and two online courses over a two-year period. Retreats are held at Montserrat Retreat House in Lake Dallas, Texas.
Applications for the next cohort will open May 1, 2026. More information about the program and upcoming webinars is available here.
Registration for the first introductory webinar will close May 7, and registration for the second webinar will close June 11. Those interested in attending may learn more and register online here.
