Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
If you need materials not available in our collection, you can request them through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). This service connects SMU to libraries across the United States.

Access SMU's Interlibrary Loan System
Eligibility
ILL is available to:
- Current SMU students
- Current and retired faculty
- Current and retired staff
Requests must be for academic or research purposes. A valid SMU ID is required.
What You Can Request
Most materials can be requested. However, the following are unavailable or difficult to obtain:
- eBooks or portions of eBooks
- Entire issues of periodicals or newspapers
- Reference books
- CDs, DVDs, videos, or audio tapes
- Archival, rare, or older materials
- Special Collections items
- Bestsellers or recently published books
- Materials held only by overseas libraries
We do not request:
- Course textbooks
- Materials for course reserve
- Items you have previously borrowed through ILL
Pickup
You will be notified by email when your item arrives. Materials can be picked up at the Underwood Law Library Circulation Desk during open hours.
Delivery Times
Delivery times vary, but typical estimates are:
- Books and other loaned items: 10–15 days
- Articles (electronic copies): 5–10 days
