Social Media
Dedman College encourages faculty, staff, and students to engage thoughtfully and professionally on social media, recognizing that we all help shape how audiences experience the College and SMU. Social media can be an effective tool for sharing research, promoting events and achievements, building community, and connecting with students, alumni, and the broader public, and these guidelines are intended to support the responsible and strategic use of social media across the College.
Dedman College Social Media Guidelines
- Know our policies. All faculty, staff, students, and affiliated departments are expected to follow applicable SMU policies, including technology use, accessibility, privacy, and brand standards. Official Dedman College accounts should align with SMU brand and communications guidelines.
- Follow copyright and fair use laws. Follow copyright and fair use laws when sharing content, images, video, research, or creative work created by others. When appropriate, credit the original creator and link to the original source
- Be clear when sharing personal opinions. Unless authorized to do so, individuals should not speak on behalf of Dedman College or SMU. When discussing College or university-related topics in a personal capacity, make it clear that your views are your own.
- Protect private and sensitive information. Do not share confidential, sensitive, or internal information on social media. Be mindful that digital content can be shared widely beyond its intended audience, and obtain permission before posting identifiable photos, conversations, or personal information involving others.
- Be respectful. We value thoughtful dialogue and a welcoming, inclusive community. Content that is harassing, discriminatory, obscene, or intentionally harmful does not reflect the standards of SMU.
- Correct mistakes promptly. If inaccurate information is shared, correct it quickly and transparently. Maintaining credibility and trust is important across all official and professional social media activity.
- Avoid overly promotional or repetitive posting. Social media should encourage meaningful engagement and conversation. Excessive self-promotion or repetitive content can diminish audience trust and effectiveness.
- Don't SPAM. Social media is an opportunity to highlight research, student and faculty achievements, events, academic insights, and stories that contribute positively to the Dedman College and SMU communities.
- When in doubt, just ask. If you are unsure whether content is appropriate to post or whether an account should be created, contact Dedman College Marketing and Communications for guidance and support.
