My research centers Anglo-Irish literature of the long nineteenth century, with a particular focus on the Gothic and its folk and fairy tale influences. I am interested in the interactions between what we commonly think of as “literature” and the literary qualities of more everyday writing preserved in archives. I am also pursuing research that examines long-nineteenth-century engagement with “othered” ways of knowing, knowledge and belief systems outside of Enlightenment rationalism, capitalism, and secularism.
My interests include:
- Victorian literature
- Irish literature
- Folklore
- Religion, superstition, magic, rationality
- The Gothic Archives
- The Irish Famine (and its legacies)
