Overview

The B.S. in sport performance leadership (SPL) at SMU prepares students for impactful careers in sport and team leadership in youth, high school, collegiate and professional settings. Housed in the Department of Applied Physiology and Sport Management within the Simmons School of Education and Human Development, the program blends academic study with hands-on experience to develop evidence-based, ethical and effective sport leaders.

Coursework emphasizes the science of human performance, coaching philosophy, sport psychology and communication – going beyond technical instruction to address motivation, focus, and athlete well-being. Students gain foundational knowledge in physiology, sport management, and legal and ethical practices and have experiential learning opportunities in real-world coaching environments. Located in one of the country’s largest sports markets, SMU positions its students for success.

Breanna Laureti ’26 is a sport performance leadership major and a nutrition intern with SMU Football. She is also a program coordinator for Exercise is Medicine (EIM), where she helped design curriculum, mentored student volunteers and promoted health literacy among senior citizens. “The SPL program has been a cornerstone in my growth as a leader. It taught me how to communicate effectively and how to manage groups with confidence.”

Researchers measure how the body responds to physiological stress in the Integrative Physiology Lab at SMU.

SMU’s B.S. in sport performance leadership students graduate with academic and practical skills for coaching leadership, including a mastery of exercise science and performance fundamentals; coaching and leadership techniques rooted in physiology and psychology; heightened communication skills; legal and ethical competencies; and familiarity with technology that serves recruitment, strategy, and athlete performance. Students also leave the program with professional experience from their capstone internship.

Graduates with a sport performance leadership degree pursue careers in coaching and sports leadership across age groups and competencies, including youth, high school, collegiate, professional and private practice coaching.

As part of the program’s Experiential Learning Lab, students explore practical and theoretical aspects of the human performance discipline with hands-on experience in the sport-coaching industry. Possible topics and activities include shadowing a coach, working on a community outreach project, and satisfying professional certification requirements. Students can also participate in research and interactive learning in the Integrative Physiology Laboratory, which is divided into “teaching pods” with specialized equipment to monitor physical performance.
