Earth Sciences.  Position No. 0050601. The Roy M. Huffington Department of Earth Sciences at Southern Methodist University invites applications to a fully endowed professorship named in honor of C.W. Matthews to be filled at the Associate or Full Professor level. We are seeking applicants who conduct innovative, interdisciplinary and quantitative research programs across all fields of geology and are especially interested in candidates working in emerging areas across disciplinary boundaries whose expertise contributes to department strengths. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to maintain an outstanding, internationally recognized, externally-funded research program; to teach, lead, and collaborate effectively a diverse student body of graduates and undergraduates; and to supervise professional staff. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department with internationally recognized faculty that conduct frontier research using quantitative, measurement-based approaches focused on the evolution of earth's fluid envelope and lithosphere, paleo- and modern climate, biogeochemical systems, and earth hazards. We are a community geared towards enabling our colleagues to succeed and lead in their individual fields. Endowments to the department support strategic faculty lines, student research and laboratory facilities. The Department features mass spectrometry and X-ray analytical laboratories and the Shuler Museum of Paleontology, supported by fully-funded technical staff positions. Faculty also participate in unique interdisciplinary research communities, including research clusters in Earth Hazards and National Security, Energy and Environmental Systems, and Data Science. All faculty in Earth Sciences are expected to fully participate in the educational mission of the department; this includes teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and mentoring postdoctoral researchers. English. Position No. 00052460. The Department of English at Southern Methodist University invites outstanding applicants for a tenured appointment at the rank of advanced Associate or early Full Professor to the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Chair in Humanities beginning August 1, 2024. The field is open. We welcome candidates in any and all fields of literary study in English, broadly defined, whose expertise would strengthen the department and its connections to affiliated departments and programs in the humanities and liberal arts, among them History, Philosophy, Art History, Ethnic Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. The holder of this chair should be committed to an ambitious research agenda and active involvement in a dynamic department and its highly endowed Ph.D. program (in which all graduate students are fully funded and therefore carry little to no debt upon completion of their program). Psychology. (Position No. 6336). The Department of Psychology at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a tenure-track Associate or Full Professor position in Psychological Clinical Science to begin in August 2024. We are searching for a candidate with an outstanding research record, as well as a strong interest in a leadership position in our Ph.D. program in clinical science (e.g., Director of Clinical Training). Our doctoral program in clinical science is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science and accredited by the American Psychological Association. Successful candidates will have a collaborative approach to research and will have a track record of successfully generating external funding for research. Sociology.  Position No. 00053170. The Department of Sociology at Southern Methodist University invites applications for an open-rank position as department Chair to begin August 1, 2024 with the chairship to begin August 1, 2025. Applicants are particularly encouraged to apply if they can contribute to the university’s larger cluster hires in data science or urban studies. Faculty searches for urban studies are being conducted in the departments of Anthropology, Economics, Education, Political Science, Religious Studies, among others. The Department of Sociology is among the larger degree-granting programs in Dedman College. We serve around 65 Sociology majors and minors and 90 Markets and Culture majors, an interdisciplinary economic sociology degree housed in Sociology. Forty percent of our students are from underrepresented groups. Housed in historic Hyer Hall overlooking the beautiful live oak-lined Dallas Hall Quad, our department is collegial with a strong history of working with McNair Scholars and offering courses that support other interdisciplinary majors in Health & Society and Human Rights and the Women’s and Gender Studies and Law and Legal Reasoning minors. Physics. Position No. 52906.  The Department of Physics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas invites applications for an open rank faculty position in Experimental Particle Physics. The appointment is expected to start in August 2024.  Southern Methodist University is a research intensive, private liberal arts university centrally located in the vibrant Dallas – Fort Worth metropolitan area. The current experimental program in the department is concentrated in the fields of particle physics and astrophysics. The particle physics program includes ATLAS at the LHC, NOvA and ICARUS at Fermilab, and development of readout and trigger electronics for collider experiments. The theory program is concentrated on the collider phenomenology and on theoretical astrophysics and cosmology. Applicants for the position must have a PhD degree, postdoctoral experience and a record of research excellence. Within the ATLAS Collaboration at the LHC, the department of physics at SMU is heavily involved in physics involving the Higgs boson, including studies of Higgs couplings and CP properties, the search for di-Higgs production and the search for the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model.  The department has an outstanding and well-equipped optoelectronics laboratory and a firmware lab specializing in detector readout electronics. The university also provides competitive high performance computing resources for data science and AI/ML applications, including an NVIDIA SuperPOD. A successful applicant is expected to take a leadership position in the experimental particle physics program at SMU, as well as within the wider particle physics community.
