Dennis S. Ippolito is the Eugene McElvaney Professor of Political Science and chairman of the Department of Political Science. Professor Ippolito received his Ph.D. in government from the University of Virginia in 1967. Prior to joining the faculty at SMU, he taught at the University of Virginia and Emory University. Professor Ippolito’s research focuses on national political institutions and federal budget policy.

His most recent book is Deficits, Debt, and the New Politics of Tax Policy (Cambridge University Press, 2012). His previous books include, among others, Why Budgets Matter: Budget Policy and American Politics; Budget Policy and the Future of Defense; Uncertain Legacies: Federal Budget Policy from Roosevelt through Reagan; Hidden Spending: The Politics of Federal Credit Programs; Congressional Spending; and The Budget and National Politics.

His work has been supported by various public and private agencies, including the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, the Twentieth Century Fund, the Smith Richardson Foundation, the Earhart Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 2010, he received the Aaron B. Wildavsky Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Field of Public Budgeting and Finance.
