About Bridwell Library:
Located in the heart of Dallas, Texas, Bridwell Library is part of the larger SMU Libraries system and provides academic resources to support the educational programs of Perkins School of Theology and the Graduate Program in Religious Studies. It is the principal resource at Southern Methodist University for the fields of theology and religious studies.

About the Position:
The Reference and Digital Services Librarian leads Bridwell Library’s efforts to conduct outstanding reference, research, and writing services through both traditional best practices and utilization of current and next-generation tools for theological, biblical studies, and ministry research. The position requires extensive reference and research services, user education, and instruction, in-person and online. The role of graduate writing support, specifically in areas of theological writing, is crucial to this position, and strong writing and editing skills are a must. In our ever-changing digital and online environments, the position will require thoughtful consideration of how to mediate between the curricular needs of theological education and the adaptive and transformative technologies that may be best suited to fulfilling those needs. With this in mind, the position will work closely with a diversity of specialists in both Bridwell and the SMU Libraries to effectively provide the best service to patrons. The position works with library staff, faculty, and administration to establish a personal connection to the library’s resources and services for students. It initiates and leads efforts to enhance student success, through planning and implementing research service, library instruction, and writing support, as well as leading workshops, classes, and tours.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides leadership and shared responsibility for planning and implementing research service, library instruction, and writing support for students, as well as leading workshops, classes, and tours.
  • Researches, plans, and implements innovative uses of current and new technologies related to theological education (e.g. Bible software, cloud-based Hebrew/Greek language learning tools), including instructional software, to support learning, teaching, and research;
  • Provides leadership, shared responsibility, and coordinated support with other SMU libraries and library staff for planning, implementing, and maintaining the Bridwell Library website; Promotes, supports, and instructs the use of current and new technologies in theological learning, teaching, and research;
  • Keeps current by maintaining skills in, and knowledge of, developments in new technologies related to theological education, and works closely with SMU libraries staff to determine best practices testing and evaluation of such resources.

 

Position Qualifications:
An ALA-accredited graduate degree in library or information sciences required, with a minimum of one year’s experience in an academic library. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will also be considered. Experience in teaching, library instruction, and academic writing and editing is strongly preferred. Background in religious studies, theology, or related humanities field is strongly preferred. Experience using digital learning or theological tools (e.g. Zotero, BibleWorks, Accordance) and social media is essential. Knowledge of basic web editing and content management tools is required. The position will work in coordination with other library staff, serve on select committees, and is encouraged to be an active member of the SMU libraries and Perkins School of Theology communities. The candidate will be expected to possess initiative and a willingness to work with a diversely skilled community of patrons.

The candidate must demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development, possess a solid commitment to public service, and have strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work collegially with faculty, staff, and students. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Knowledge of biblical languages or Spanish is preferred.
