Job Summary:


Bridwell Library (SMU Libraries and Perkins School of Theology) seeks an imaginative, innovative, flexible, forward-looking, and collaborative professional to serve as Head of Access and User Experience Librarian. Responsible for developing and executing a vision of seamless user experience across Bridwell Library’s service points (in-person and online), in coordination with colleagues in the SMU Libraries and Perkins School of Theology, this position will provide guidance for user-centered services among students, faculty, staff, and the broader SMU community. The position reports to the Director of Bridwell Library.


Essential Functions:


This position works with colleagues to integrate library expertise, resources, and services progressively toward more efficient user experience, and collaborates especially with Bridwell research and theological writing center staff to support the needs of graduate students at Perkins School of Theology. The candidate will cultivate an inclusive space that fosters and advances best practices in teaching, learning, and research, and advocates for proactive engagement with all users. The position performs a range of planning, management, and collaborative functions that include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervises one full-time library staff and several student assistants to efficiently and effectively support the access, circulation, stacks maintenance, reserves, interlibrary loan, document delivery, and ready-reference of the library;
  • Coordinates student assistant and weekend supervisor training;
  • Coordinates with library managers on ready-reference/Springshare and collaborates closely with Bridwell’s reference, research, and writing staff;
  • Works with and supports Bridwell’s Technical Services staff to facilitate and enhance user experience of digital resources;
  • Works with Director of Strategic Initiatives to foster continuous improvement initiatives (through assessment and data evaluation) designed to enhance communication, community awareness, and satisfaction with library services;
  • Actively participates in cross-library teams to create new products and resources, enhance existing service models, and deliver point-of-need support to faculty and students;
  • Works with the Discovery and Systems Librarian and the Resource Sharing Librarian to improve policies related to access and delivery of materials to the campus community

Librarians at SMU are staff and participate in a promotion process. Librarians are expected to demonstrate continuous professional development in addition to performing their specific responsibilities. This expectation includes such activities as participating in and contributing to departmental, library and campus-wide committees or working groups, as well as active involvement in the library profession at a regional, national, and/or international level. Additionally, librarians are expected to maintain a broad awareness of current and emerging issues that affect their particular areas of expertise, participate in relevant publishing and presentation opportunities, and pursue knowledge of professional trends and developments that can be applied to evolving research, services, and collections.




Education and Experience:


A Master's degree in Library Science, or equivalent, from an ALA-accredited graduate program and a minimum of three (3) years of academic library experience is required. At least one (1) of those years must be in supervisory experience.


A second graduate degree, or equivalent, in theology, religious studies, philosophy, or divinity is preferred. Previous experience in an academic research library with a particular expertise in the design, evaluation, and delivery of user-centered services is also desired.


Candidate should possess progressively responsible management and supervisory experience in an academic research library or in comparable higher education environment. Experience managing circulation within an integrated library system (e.g. Alma) is helpful.


Alma certification is required within one year of employment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


The ideal candidate will have effective and clear communication skills with demonstrated fluency in interpersonal relationship management, cultural intelligence, and EQ. He/she will have the ability to navigate and negotiate public facing services and patrons and have experience with assessment of services.


Candidate should have the ability to lead staff, build collaboration and delegate responsibilities appropriately. Knowledge of emerging trends in theological and higher education is helpful, but not required. He/she will have a commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment and transparency in decision making.


Candidate should have strong leadership skills, including keen analytical and conceptual abilities.
