Art

The Division of Art offers a unique environment for the study of studio art. With professional focus in six areas of study—painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and ceramics—leading to the B.F.A. or M.F.A. degrees, students are afforded an unrestricted creative environment in which to develop as artists. As a result, our students are well-prepared to enter a rapidly changing, ever more visual world—as artists, teachers, critics, the founders of businesses, gallery owners or designers.

The intensity and focus of work at SMU is complemented by rich creative and intellectual resources available throughout the Meadows School of the Arts and the University, which will enrich your life while here and for years to come. At the core of this development is a faculty comprised of artists of recognized accomplishment and commitment to teaching. Five have won teaching awards within the University or Meadows School, and all have deep interests outside of their disciplines. They will teach you, challenge you and provoke you. We augment the faculty with an excellent program of visiting artists of international stature, as well as superb regional artists who visit, discuss, and work within our studios. Perhaps foremost, the department has an informal atmosphere where students have easy access to all faculty, and where wide-ranging exchange between faculty and students is common and encouraged.
