Making sense of the dollars
Figuring out how to pay for college can be a little overwhelming,
but paying for your future can be more affordable than you think.
SMU students represent a range of economic backgrounds.
Don't know if you are eligible for a merit scholarship?
Don't think you qualify for
financial aid? You may be surprised. More than 70 percent of SMU
undergraduates receive some sort of assistance in the form of
merit- or need-based award packages. That's why it's important to
file the appropriate forms and meet with one of our
financial aid advisers to map out your future.
You may be eligible to receive some combination of merit-based
scholarships, need-based grants, part-time jobs, and/or low-interest loans. We
give assistance to those
who otherwise could not afford college, and we also help others who
could benefit from and contribute to the SMU community with some
financial support. (That could be you.)
First-year students should
apply by January 15 for priority consideration for
merit and leadership scholarships.
Transfer students should apply by April 1 (Fall
entry) or November 1 (Spring entry) to be considered for
merit scholarships.
If you excel in academics and leadership, there are opportunities
for merit scholarships. If you meet the federal criteria for need-based
financial aid, there are a variety of grants, low-interest loans,
scholarships, and part-time work opportunities. For your convenience
SMU offers a payment plan. For more information, visit Financial
Options.
