SMU is very concerned about the health and well-being of all students and we at the Student Health Center are here to serve and provide for your medical care while attending the University. In order to establish you have appropriate health care coverage, a mandatory health insurance requirement was passed by the President’s Executive Council (PEC) in February 2008. This mandatory health insurance policy requires students to maintain insurance coverage as a condition of their enrollment.
Beginning November 2, 2009, SMU’s mandatory health insurance policy requires students to provide documentation of insurance coverage (waive) or to enroll (elect) in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) each semester. In order to avoid automatic enrollment into SHIP and thereby have a semi-annual premium charge applied to your student account, you must take steps to waive SHIP coverage each semester in the Student Center component of Access.SMU. Note: The Health Insurance button in the Student Center component of Access.SMU will appear only after a student has enrolled for classes each semester.
IMPORTANT: Your Fall election of the SMU Student Health Insurance Plan will automatically renew the enrollment for the following Spring term. If you have elect and have been charged for the SMU student Health Insurance Plan for Fall 2014, you will automatically be re-enrolled in the plan though AcademicHealth, Inc./Blue Cross Blue Shield for the upcoming Spring. A health insurance premium of $XXXX.XX will automatically be billed to your SMU account for Spring during the December billing period. This applies only to students. You will need to re-enroll your dependents or spouse for Spring by completing the Dependent Enrollment Form as you did for Fall. If your situation will be changing for Spring and you qualify for a waiver, you must complete the waiver process in Access.SMU before the Spring deadline.
