Online training is available for many of the services and software supported by the Office of Information Technology. For all other software, we do offer thousands of video training courses, available 24/7, through lyndaCampus.  


Canvas: An Introduction

CanvasThis class covers the newly introduced Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) that will be replacing Blackboard. These open sessions will introduce you to the Canvas interface, creating course content, customizing your course's look and feel, assignment grading, and new features that were not included in Blackboard. (90 minutes session)

Courses will begin in January 2016 and run through August 2016. The following workshops are slated through March 31.

All classes with take place in Crow 186 (lower level).
These courses are open to walk-ins – No registration needed.

If after 15 minutes, the class will be cancelled if no participants have shown.

Box: Getting Started

Box

This class is a quick introduction to SMU's new cloud storage system, Box. Learn how to log into box, add and organize files, install desktop sync software, and share your files with others. We will also cover file collaboration, which allows you to edit and talk about documents with others. (30 minutes)

ExcelIn this 1 hour hands-on-workshop, we’ll explore:

  • Basic workbook management
  • Data entry tips
  • Working with tables and charts
  • Creating basic formulas using built-in functions and arithmetic operators
  • Using the basic functions SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, and MIN
  • Finding and correcting errors in calculations
  • Understanding absolute and mixed references

Qualtrics: Creating Basic Surveys and Registration Forms

Sitecore: Getting Started [Hands-On Workshop]

SitecoreThis introductory training is for individuals who have never used Sitecore or will be responsible for editing existing content and adding basic pages. (90 minutes)

The Agenda Includes:

  • Accessing Sitecore.
  • Editing existing pages.
  • Creating new pages.
  • Adding content, images, and links.
  • Uploading Media Items, like PDF files and images.
  • Publishing content to stage for review.
  • Making your content public.

Sitecore: Advanced Topics [Hands-On Workshop]

SitecoreSitecore, SMU’s Web Content Management System, does a lot of the work in creating your pages, but sometimes it needs a little wrangling to really get it to shine. This advanced class will take advantage of HTML & CSS to spice up those pages by adding enhancements such as buttons, table formatting, and alerts to your pages. (90 minutes)

This advance class is for individuals that use Sitecore on a regular basis. 

PREREQUISITES:

  • Knowledge of basic HTML syntax and formatting.
  • Mastery of basic concepts taught in Sitecore Basics (Available online) course.

Sharepoint: Moving Inside.SMU to the Cloud (SharePoint 2013)

During the weekend of February 27th, Inside.SMU will be moved to the cloud. This webinar is designed to support current users of Inside.SMU as we transition this application.

SharepointThis session is designed to get you acquainted with the new look and feel of Inside.SMU (SharePoint 2013). We’ll review the basics of working with a team site: working with lists, libraries, accessing site settings and sharing content with users. We will also briefly discuss some of the new features you should expect as we move to the cloud. (60 minutes)

my.SMU Training

Security and training for my.SMU (formerly Access.SMU) must first be approved by the Registrar’s Office or appropriate Module Lead. Managers may request security and training for their employee by submitting a Help Desk ticket. Please note, for security purposes the Training Team can only accept my.SMU training requests via the Help Desk ticket system. Instructions for selecting the appropriate form can be found here. Once the Training Team has received approval to train on my.SMU, we will schedule the appropriate in-person or online training.

Online Systems Training

SMU Financials

Before SMU Financials training can be taken an account request form must be submitted by your Financial Officer on your behalf. You’ll need to have your FO open a help desk ticket. They will need to complete the following items:

  • Under IT Forms select Account Request
  • select employee accounts,
  • select Financial Accounts
  • select New SMU Financials Account.

 

Once the managers of the Financial system receive the ticket, they will send it to us indicating which type of financials training you need.
