A towering and thrilling Shakespearean masterpiece featuring one of theater’s most entertaining villains and the array of brilliant women and men who oppose him. Master of a diabolically cruel wit, Richard boasts that he “can smile and murder whiles I smile….” In response, the poet W.H. Auden suggests that the murderous king “must always make enemies, for then he can be sure he exists.” Directed by Associate Professor Michael Connolly. Richard III is about a time in England when, following a civil war between the royal family of York and the royal family of Lancaster, the country enjoys a period of peace under King Edward IV. But Edward’s younger brother, Richard, resents Edward’s power and aspires to have the throne for himself. To achieve this, he decides to kill anyone he has to in order to become king. |
