SMU is sponsoring a Summer Author Series, featuring faculty members reading excerpts from their books, with the final presentation scheduled for Aug. 21. The series is in conjunction with the Dallas Mayor's Summer Reading Club.
Creative Writing Professor David Haynes will read from A Star in the Face of the Sky at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Audelia Road branch at 10045 Audelia Road. Haynes's book is about two families coping with the legacy of personal and political violence. Haynes is the author of seven novels for adults and five books for younger readers. He directs SMU's creative writing program and teaches regularly in the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers.
Earlier this summer, Statistical Science Lecturer Alan Elliott read from his Legendary Locals of Oak Cliff; Eric Bing, a professor of global health in the Department of Applied Physiology and Wellness, read from Pharmacy on a Bicycle: Innovative Solutions for Global Health and Poverty; and Law Professor Jeffrey Kahn read from Mrs. Shipley's Ghost: The Right to Travel and Terrorist Watchlists.
Elliott is co-author of the family comedy movie Angels Love Donuts and the author of Images of America: Oak Cliff (a pictorial history of the Oak Cliff section of Dallas),Currents in American History (a brief history of the United States based on significant incidents that shaped our history, with Terry Bilhartz), Texas Ingenuity: Lone Star Inventors, Inventions, and Innovators, and A Daily Dose of the American Dream, Stories of Success, Triumph and Inspiration (365 American success stories.)
Bing is a senior fellow and director of global health at the George W. Bush Institute and has initiated worldwide health initiatives, including serving as co-leader of the institute’s Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon partnership, an $85 million public-private program designed to combat cervical and breast cancer in Africa and Latin America.
Kahn teaches and writes about American constitutional law, Russian law, human rights, and counterterrorism. His latest research on U.S. legal topics focuses on the right to travel and national security law. His most recent book, Mrs. Shipley’s Ghost, critically examines the U.S. Government's No Fly List.
