Dallas Can Academy Students To Read Original Writings at SMU Literary Festival
SMU's Litfest hosted high school student writers from the Dallas Can Academy.
Four student writers from Dallas Can Academy are participating in the 2012 WordSpace Student Readings hosted by Southern Methodist University (SMU) Literary Festival. The high school students will read their original writings in SMU’s McCord Auditorium in Dallas Hall at 6:30 p.m. March 21st.
Katie Bartolotta, Sherman Collins, Keenan Reeves and Kenny Sparks, all seniors at Dallas Can Academy’s Ross Avenue campus, each wrote original works to read as part of their school’s emphasis in reading and writing and have been rehearsing with their teachers and fellow students to prepare for the event.
Student writers from Greenhill School, Hockaday School, Booker T. Washington Arts Academy and Yavneh Academy will also read their works during the event. Thestudents and their work are curated by well-known writers who also work in education, featuring emerging writers selected by Sanderia Smith of Texans Can Academies, Farid Matuk of Greenhill School, Kyle Vaughn of Hockaday School, Scott Davison of Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet and Tim Cloward of Yavneh Academy. SMU creative writing students will host the high school students and WordSpace will host a reception immediately following the reading.
Three visiting authors to the festival, Amina Gautier, Shannon Cain and Krys Lee will also conduct writing workshops at three Dallas Can campuses Friday, March 23rd while they are in Dallas. Gautier is the recipient of the 2011 Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, Cain won the 2011 Drue Heinz Literature Prize and Lee’s February 2012 story collection is receiving rave advanced reviews.
The Literary Festival is held on SMU’s campus and all events are free of charge.
