The SMU community continues to send thoughts and prayers to the people of Japan who have been affected by the tragic earthquake and its aftermath.
As the tragedy unfolds, SMU faculty experts have become sources for information and clarification to media outlets nationwide, particularly Dedman College Dean William Tsutsui, who was in Tokyo as part of the Japanese American Leadership Delegation when the earthquake hit March 11. His interviews and his SMU Adventures blog provided media outlets and their audiences with an eyewitness account of the earthquake’s impact on Tokyo. In fact, Tsutsui’s quote to The New York Times comparing the movement of downtown skyscrapers in Tokyo to “trees swaying in the breeze” was the Times’ quote of the day March 12.
In addition, Dedman College seismologist Brian Stump explained the earthquake to multiple television and radio outlets, while Bruce Bullock, director of SMU’s Maguire Energy Institute in the Cox School of Business, discussed the impact of the events on energy markets with anchors from the Weather Channel.
Here is a sampling of the media outlets that have included SMU experts since March 11.
