SMU’s Meadows presents “An Evening with Genghis Barbie” on Oct. 14

The Meadows Wind Ensemble at SMU welcomes Genghis Barbie, New York City’s “hottest classical, pop, rock, jazz, indie, alternative, punk, electro-acoustic ensemble” for a rollicking concert at 8 p.m. Friday, October 14.

DALLAS (SMU) –The Meadows Wind Ensemble at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, under the direction of Jack Delaney, welcomes Genghis  Barbie, New York City’s “hottest classical, pop, rock, jazz, indie, alternative, punk, electro-acoustic ensemble,” for a rollicking concert at 8 p.m. Friday, October 14 in Caruth Auditorium of the Owen Arts Center on the SMU campus.

Tickets are $13 adults, $10 seniors and $7 for SMU students, faculty and staff.  Parking is available at Hillcrest and Binkley and in the garage beneath the Meadows Museum. For more information, please call the Meadows Ticket Office at 214-768-2787.

An all-female French horn quartet, Genghis Barbie – composed of Freedom Barbie, Velvet Barbie, Electric Barbie and Attila the Horn – is considered one of the most innovative and energetic chamber ensembles on the music scene.

The members are all classically-trained players who studied at Juilliard or the Manhattan School of Music, and are dedicated to distinctive, interactive and personal performances. The Meadows concert is part of their inaugural U.S. tour. (Read more about the group at www.genghisbarbie.com.)

Gnghis Barbie

The program will include Richard Strauss’s short, stirring Vienna Philharmoniker Fanfare, noted for its striking brass textures, and Robert Schumann’s Konzertstuck for Four Horns and Wind Ensemble, a virtuoso showcase for Genghis Barbie. Also to be performed are Eric Ewazen’s compelling Symphony in Brass, the exuberant Circuits by Cindy McTee and Minute Fanfare, a rousing work for eight horns by SMU student composer Vince Gover.

Genghis Barbie also will present a free master class from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, in Caruth Auditorium, hosted by Gregory Hustis, principal horn of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and adjunct professor of horn at the Meadows School of the Arts.

About The Meadows Wind Ensemble

The Meadows Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the United States and Europe, and has won the acclaim of leading composers for performances that are consistently thoughtful and dynamic, both in concert and on recording. Composed of the finest winds, brass and percussion from the Meadows School of the Arts, and throughout SMU, the Wind Ensemble performs a broad and diverse range of literature, and regularly augments its instrumentation to include strings in order to access the repertory of the modern chamber orchestra.

The Meadows Wind Ensemble has recorded four compact discs on the Gasparo label, including Shadow Wood: Six Poems of Tennessee Williams, featuring the music of Warren Benson, The Drums of Summer: Live from Austria, which was awarded first prize at the Internationale Musiktag Vocklabruk in Austria, 3 Cents, featuring Kurt Weill’s Little Threepenny Music, and Snow Tracks, featuring the music of Samuel Adler and Stephen Jones. The most recent recording, Magneticfireflies, featuring the music of Augusta Read Thomas, is available on Ms. Thomas’s personal label.
