Hispanic Youth Symposium at SMU gets students set for college
Some 200 Dallas-area students will attend the Hispanic Youth Symposium from June 16 to 19 at Southern Methodist University, where high school sophomores and juniors will spend three nights and four days immersed in college life.
"I thought it looked interesting to be able to spend a class period talking to students about the wonders of life and death," she said. "I think I'd like to do that."
But she'll have to learn how to get into college in the first place.
She'll get her chance this month as one of 200 Dallas-area students attending the Hispanic Youth Symposium from June 16 to 19 at Southern Methodist University. High school sophomores and juniors will spend three nights and four days immersed in college life.
Students will spend almost every waking minute, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., in workshops on everything from team building to mentoring to scholarships to talent competitions. The symposium will even show the guys how to tie a tie and teach the girls the pitfalls of early pregnancy.
"From the minute they step foot on campus, we take over their lives," said Fernando Salazar, coordinator for the symposium.
And that's crucial if students are to reap the benefits of an intense period of learning how to prepare for one of the biggest challenges they'll face.
