Photographs from DeGolyer Library on exhibit in the Hawn Gallery

Photographs from SMU's DeGolyer Library collection, some of them more than 150 years old, are on display in the Mildred Hawn Exhibition Gallery in the University's Owen Arts Center, 6101 Hillcrest Ave.

This exhibit, which is being held in conjunction with the annual meeting of The Society for Photographic Education in Dallas March 26-29, features highlights from the library's exceptional collection of more than 500,000 photographs.

While the focus of the photography collection at the DeGolyer is the U.S. West and Mexico, there are surprises, too. Included among the 80 images in the exhibit are Civil War pictures by Timothy O'Sullivan, Western landscapes by Carleton Watkins, Andrew J. Russell, Charles Roscoe Savage, William Henry Jackson and John K. Hillers. There are also Indian portraits by Edward Curtis, photographs of Mexico by Abel Briquet and Hugo Brehme, as well as 19th century views of India, Jamaica, Russia, Italy and Trinidad, and works by contemporary photographers Yousuf Karsh, Gordon Parks, Craig Varjabedian, and June Van Cleef.

In addition, there will an entire case devoted to the newly acquired Lawrence T. Jones III Texas Photography Collection of 5,000 rare Texas images, including portraits of Santa Anna, Sam Houston, Mexican American War and Civil War soldiers, frontier towns and views from throughout the state from the 1840s on.

The exhibit also includes the only known extant portrait of Cynthia Ann Parker, who was captured as a girl by the Comanches and went on to become the mother of Comanche Chief Quanah Parker.

The Mildred Hawn Exhibition Gallery serves as a vital part of the Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts Library at Southern Methodist University. The mission of the gallery is to serve library patrons by exhibiting items that will add interest to and enhance the art, music, and theatre holdings of the library, including those of the Jerry Bywaters Special Collections Wing; and to give special attention to events sponsored by the Central University Libraries and the Meadows School of the Arts.

It is open during regular library hours: 8 a.m. to midnight Mondays-Thursdays; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays; and 1:00 p.m. to midnight Sundays.
