Leakage of hydrochloric acid inside a sealed box at the J. Lindsay Embrey Engineering Building on the SMU campus resulted in the temporary evacuation of about 15 people from the building Tuesday morning.

No injuries were reported as a result of the leak, which was discovered at approximately 10:25 a.m. by an SMU graduate student who noticed dampness on the exterior of the box.

The box was located in a third-floor lab. Following normal procedure when hazardous materials are involved, emergency personnel responded from SMU, University Park, Highland Park and Dallas. The building was evacuated as a precaution. A Dallas hazardous materials team secured the area and the box was removed.

The building reopened at about 1:15 p.m. today.
