Poster for new SMU graduate advertising programSouthern Methodist University is prepared to launch a graduate program in advertising that caters to students interested in social media outlets, social responsibility and new technologies designed to reach a global marketplace.

SMU’s Termerlin Advertising Institute said Friday it will begin offering its Master of Arts in Advertising Institute in August. Applicants will apply for 20 available slots. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 15. The institute’s graduate curriculum will cover everything from persuasive tactics to account planning, new-media solutions and problem solving strategies. The program also will focus on social responsibility and aims to provide students with practical experience.

“Globalization, social media and other advances of this digital age have created tremendous opportunities for marketers to deliver their messages to the public in innovative ways,” said Dr. Patricia Alvey, chair and director of the Temerlin Advertising Institute. “However, only those advertising professionals who fully embrace both the business and creative aspects of the advertising disciplines, as well as the enormity of change in the global consumer marketplace will be truly prepared for the business environment of tomorrow.”

SMU said in a statement Friday that faculty members spent 18 months analyzing 150 advertising programs at institutions across the country to determine the elements that will be key to the university’s curriculum.

The 36-credit-hour program will evaluate program applicants on professional experience and on their undergraduate records.
