The SMU Cox Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship issued its annual ranking Thursday of the 100 fastest-growing privately held companies in the Dallas area.

Despite a struggling housing market, homebuilder Wall Homes in Arlington took the top spot.

The rankings measured performance from 2005 through 2007.

To qualify for the list, companies had to be headquartered in the Dallas area, have had sales of more than $500,000 but no more than $75 million in 2005, have increased their sales over three years, and have "character satisfactory to the Dallas 100."

SMU noted that the 100 companies that made this year's list had combined sales of $9.9 billion in the three years, increased their sales an average of 171 percent from 2005 to 2007, and saw their employee count grow over that period from 11,391 to 22,677.
