Jayne Suhler has served as professor of practice in the Journalism Division since 2001, teaching a range of journalism courses, including Advanced News Reporting, Literary Journalism, and Feature Writing, and helped build the curriculum for the division’s fashion media program. She helped develop a breaking news internship program with The Dallas Morning News, and supervised the division’s honors program for many years. Now serving as an adjunct, she is the Student Media adviser for The Daily Campus and the fashion website SMU Look. Through content partnerships with local media and The Daily Campus, Suhler pushes reporting students to cover stories in diverse communities and to witness first-hand how elected officials, residents, businesses and special interest groups operate and collaborate. One partnership, with the news hub Dallas South News, was profiled in a study by the Knight Foundation about student-generated content in local media outlets.
