Pathways to Business: Majors and Minors

SMU offers multiple majors, minors, specializations and concentrations across all five of our undergraduate schools that will support students seeking to hold a post-graduate career in business and industry. Below is a comprehensive but not exhaustive list of majors and minors available to SMU students. While the majors listed below are often selected by students interested in business careers, students can pursue any major at SMU and successfully enter the business world. We encourage you to explore each of these majors in-depth and learn the unique benefits that each major/minor offers.

How to explore a major

  1. Click on a major from lists below

Below, in colorful boxes, are lists of majors and minors from each of the five undergraduate degree-granting schools at SMU. Each of these majors/minors helps students gain valuable skills that business recruiters look for in future employees. the link will take you to the department's webpage where you can learn more about course offerings, prerequisites and degree requirements, and faculty members who teach in that department.

  2. Use the Degree Planner tool

Utilize technology to see what your schedule would look like in a specific major. Degree Planner, a software tool in the my.SMU Student Dashboard, will pre-populate a comprehensive degree plan through graduation that will adjust to fit with your academic goals.

  3. Connect with your PAL

The Peer Academic Leaders (PALs) are undergraduate students who are available to help their fellow students better understand the Common Curriculum, utilize academic resources, and navigate academic challenges. PALs work directly with students empowering them to take ownership of their collegiate careers through mentorship and educational programming.

  4. Attend an event

The UAC and Hegi Family Career Development Center hosts multiple events throughout the academic year that provide insight into different majors such as the "ZOOM IN..." series hosted by the UAC and the All-Majors Career Fair hosted by Hegi Career Center. There are additional events hosted around campus by schools and departments to help students explore majors and minors. We encourage you to explore upcoming events on SMU 360 and attend any that interest you in order to learn more about the pathway options available to you.

  5. Schedule a conversation with an advisor

Students can schedule an appointment with their academic advisor located in the University Advising Center (UAC) at any time. Advisors can help you sort through major options, set you on the road to declare a major, and assist you with organizing classes and creating a four-year plan.
