    • Conversations about Race, Gender, and Other Issues Across Divides: The 2024 Elections and Beyond
      • One of the reasons we remain silent, even when something that deeply touches our identity or core values is at stake in some way, is that we have not done the preparatory work to engage in important conversations across deep social divides. In this brief workshop, we'll think about the conversations we're not having, and then prepare for those conversations using an interview technique designed to uncover what matters most to you, as well as points of intersection between you and those you'd like to be heard and better understood by. The workshop will be led by Religious Studies Professor Dr. Jill DeTemple using approaches developed by Essential Partners, a non-profit dedicated to conflict transformation through dialogue.

    • The Allure of Empire: American Encounters with Asians in the Age of Expansion and Exclusion
      • Dr. Chris Suh (Emory University) will discuss his book, The Allure of Empire: American Encounters with Asians in the Age of Expansion and Exclusion (Oxford University Press, 2023). It traces how American ideas about race in the Pacific were made and remade on the imperial stage before World War II. Following the Russo-Japanese War, the United States cultivated an amicable relationship with Japan based on the belief that it was a "progressive" empire akin to its own. Even as the two nations competed for influence in Asia and clashed over immigration issues in the American West, the mutual respect for empire sustained their transpacific cooperation until Pearl Harbor, when both sides disavowed their history of collaboration and cast each other as incompatible enemies.
