Mia Jimenez Reflects on Journey Forward Mentoring Internship

Firstly, I would like to say I am grateful to the SMU English Department for providing me the opportunity to intern with different organizations based in Dallas. My experience throughout my internship this Spring 2026 semester was enlightening. I had the opportunity to work with Journey Forward Mentoring as their Storytelling and Communications Intern and create social media posts for the organization, as well as attend in-person events and take photos using my camera. I had previously designed social media posts and took pictures using my camera for personal use, but it was exciting to obtain experience using these skills for marketing and growing the following of a non-profit organization. A challenge during this internship process was inconsistent communication regarding deadlines and expectations, but this experience has taught me the importance of communication and has helped me develop stronger organizational skills. I look forward to utilizing these learned skills and more throughout my professional career. Overall, my time with Journey Forward Mentoring was nothing short of great. It was fulfilling to assist them and play a part in their mission to increase access to higher education opportunities for students in Dallas.
